History
The Christelik-Maatskaplike Raad (Christian Social Services) family was established in South Africa in 1944, when the world was at war. Born at a time of global conflict many families and communities were torn apart. Whilst South Africa was not as affected; poverty and inequality largely contributed to the country’s own ongoing battle of broken homes and dysfunctional families.
Initially a project of the Dutch Reformed Church (NG Kerk), CMR has become a separately registered Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) that focuses on providing social services primarily in support of child protection in the Eastern Cape. CMR is founded on love and compassion as well as other Christian values – serving all vulnerable children and families, irrespective of race, creed or religious beliefs.
CMR Eastern Cape is the Regional coordinating body for 11 CMR Branches which are all independently registered as Non Profit Organisations in South Africa. These branches represent different communities situated in the Eastern Cape. The regional office is based in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) and adopts strategies to create: streamlined, co-ordinated and strategic approaches to ensure child protection and safety in the Eastern Cape.
